Hoped to see SS Thursday of the next week. Charles/ miraculous escape. Capt. Buller's account. Evening of 14 September began C steppingover the gunwale the plank gave way, and C. fell into the sea. The ship was going at about 5 knots. It was quite dark, lieut. & purser Mr. Stewart & Mr. Fitzgerald lept from the wardroom window & swam for 20 minutes without success. The boats were ordered out. C could not swim but Rpbert had taught him to float. He ''Sang out'' and a marine lept overboard and c aught him as he sank. He had swallowed much sea waterl The surgeons were very attentive to him.
