Poor House at Townstall, Only 4 at meeting, resolutions enclosed & decisions postponed till house-governess is established. Non attendents had no power to overturn plan. GG ignorant of Treasury matters. Weather bad for newly planted Espaliers etc.

Meeting held in pursuance of a notice in Townstal Church on Sunday 8 February 1784. Agreed that St. Clare's Chapel held of the Corporation of Dartmouth by Arthur Holdsworth by lease, be bought for use as a poor house . 18 Trustees appointed 3 of whom they were to choose to deal with all necessary arrangements. The scheme to be financed by the poor rates. The resolutions were to be drawn up by Mr. Walter Prideaux, attorney at law.

Possible tenant, Mr. Eshelas would employ Fox, sent Foreman to him, Fox not satisfield, has purchased hemp etc. JK received young trees, & seeds, anxious about severe weather, gave Mr. Gretton francs for letter to JS. Rent & repair of Cornworthy. Lowe Echelas concerned about competition from Fox who was afraid of not finding work so wanted to start his own rope making business. JS opposed this but did not want Fox to be forced to leave. Seedsman's bill enclosed but JK is to check the trees, and to tell what has been done to help the poor of Townstal in the cold.

Great fall of snow delayed letters. Apologies for disappointing JS. But Sir Thomas Gunston had not yet paid J.F.L. as he was disappointed at money owed him. JFL would try to get the money from W.Drewe. Daughter just weaned. Hopes to be in Town in about a fortnight.

P.O. left London so missed invitation. Possible union of parties or dissolution of Parliament within the next week. Extremely inclement weather. Poor suffering, liberal donations. Person appointed by Goldsmith caused delay till F.O threatened he would not enter into other Award Bonds: concerning dispute about poor money. P.O. appointed Messr. Pinson, Goldsmith & W.Holdsworth who appoint?? not from Dartmouth. Messrs Sanders & Hay bankers of Exeter who would appoint a third man to decide the business. With better weather people would be fitting out ships. Poor state of Commerce.

Mr. Drewe unable to help. JS needed £1000 by 20 March. JS expected to see JFL's brother that day. JS would have liked to be on a grey horse bought by the Duke of Bedford. JFL not expected till after the Assizes. The fox runs well. Glad the Luttrell nursery are well.

JHS has ?????? bolt to Marlat Corporation. He required money from J.S.Parson Adams' son's. Possible lectureship at Kingsbridge.

Sorry that JF cannot get ground to work. Mr. Echelas' abandoned character, hopes he falls in pit dug for JF etc. JF's family all ill, one child recently died. JF doubtful if he can work again. Hopes to stay a month or two before JS drives him out. Friends lent money to buy hemp etc.
