JS assumed RP. as Town Clerk, had seen the account of the Petition against the return for Dartmouth. JS hoped for R.P.'s support though he & his sons lived some way away. J.S. gave Mr. Roger a book with old handwriting which he needed to borrow. J.S. recently had seen part of R.P's family settled in London.

J.S's complaint to R.P. as Town Clerk of the Bord that his deputy had treated him with indignity because of his Petition to Parliament, nor should papers be removed from the books which by Order of the Speaker, J.S. had a right to see.

In case J.S's Petition to Parliament should have altered Ld.F's opinion of J.S's former sentiments, he would point out the strong support he had in Dartmouth. He thanked Ld.F. for relieving him from the office of Sheriff which would have made him ineligible for appointment if the Election was void.

J.S. appointed Sheriff for 1791. R.R. for many years trumpeter to the Castle of Exeter for the Sheriff of Devon. The previous year a gentleman promised him great things & sent R.R. & family to London. This was evidently a failure so R.R. asked if he could be trumpeter for J.S. Counsellor Fanshawe might recommend him.

J.S's search of the Corporation Records of Dartmouth. If needed could Mr. J. spend a few days helping J.S. Concern that Mr. Gibbs was retained before the Committee on the other side, G.S. he had told J.S. that 2 counsels only were permitted in confidential discussion; (crossed out:- Mr. Dallas was retained by J.S. not Mr. Gibbs.)

Reply to J.S's letter of 3 Jan. delayed as (young) John (Fanshawe) had a cold & inflamed eyes. A.M.S. rather unwell, would enquire about vacancy (at hospital). Unable to take the Gallenas till the night before they were to be taken away. (age not yet available) Stormy weather. Mr. Fanshawe mainly in Exeter, Sessions following week. Glad Seale family were well. Maria & Harriet went to Chandos Street with Kitty to celebrate her birthday. Mr. Fanshawe had just returned. He had a vacancy for J.S's invalide.

J.S. reading records till almost blind. Mr. Gibbs said to have accepted a retainer against J.S. 2 counsels only accepted on one side of a petition. Mr.G was giving opinion to one side & aid to the other. J.S. could not understand the Common Law. Letter enclosed to Mr. Gibbs with request to send the Case with his opinion on it.

Dartmouth papers received with Mr. G's opinion. J.S. hoped it was untrue that Mr.G. had been retained on the hearing of J.S's petition against him. No disrespect that J.S. had not retained Mr.G. but that other opinions were more favourable to J.S's claim. Regulation of Parliament admitted but 2 counsels. Powerful evidence to support J.S. who was very hurt. He hoped the members & inhabitants of Dartmouth would be favoured by Mr. G's assistance.

Letter just received. Hopeful all going in J.S's favour. Jahn(Fanshawe's) eyes getting better. A.M.S. unwell; long tempestuous wet weather, scarcely able to go to church. Bill for £49 received, would pay J.S's insurance. Girl for hospital not heard of. Mr. Fanshawe gone to Sessions. Gallenas roosting hard to catch; cages made. Mr. F. promised Lady Buller a pair. Lady Rogers passed through en route to meet Sir F.Rogers.

Plans for J.H.S's journey. J.S. presumed that Mr.F. would not set off till morning 21 Jan'y. Mr. F. to take expenses out of money sent. Request for Mr. F. to inform Mr. Gretton at Hitchen when J.H.S. arrived at Maidenhead Bridge and to ask Mr. G. to send his servant there to collect him.

Mrs.B -- presumed to have informed Mr.B of the report about him, & he had sorted it out & had been advised by Counsel when the B-y affair was to be tried etc. Actions for dues begun probably hearing next assizes. Mr B to find out about Mr. V(illier)'s affairs if possible. J.S's searches expecting to be nearly complete by Mr. B's return. Mr. B's 'widow' pretty well.

Letter of 27 Jan. received. J.S. presumed answer from Counsel about Quo Warranto against the Mayor had come. No use sending up cases with former opinions. Need to form judgement when research was complete to help Mr. Gibbs to found his motion with the affidavits etc.

Previous letter sent on Monday under cover to Sir F.Rogers at Bates and one to Mr. Bruce. The Corporation were pressing on with the action for Town dues. J.S. feared the Prince payed their costs so it was an unequal contest for him. Need for Mr. Shore Douglass etc. to apprise the Prince's people of what was contended. Mr. Drewe was to enquire about Mr. G.Gillard, a freeman, said to have had the grant of a Renewal of a corporation Lease if he did not vote for J.S. and to find if an act of Bribery would be liable for a conviction.

Mrs. G pleased with Elzabeth Maria's & Harriet's visit. Mrs. Buller escorted them to Queen's Street. Most friends away in Town, poor weather. A gentleman & his son expected that day. Little John S a great favourite with Mrs. G's boys. J.S. had whooping cough, much of it in Dartmouth.

John H.Seale's cough better, kept off animal food given 1 grain of pecacuanha. Little Davenport, the 2 Gratton infants & according to the Miss Seales, the Seale infants were not well. If Mrs.S was successful with her medicine, Dr. G. would be grateful to know details. Master S. wrote the destination address to avoid alarm.
