Seale 0961 Jn’o Tonkin to Mr. Savery 24 March 1784 Copy sent by JT to JS   Seale Family Papers      1784 Jan-Jun 18thC
DHRG No. 101123
Mr. Savery's letter just arrived saying Mr. Brooke was mistaken. In conversation Mr. S has admitted he would be bound to accept the terms offered if not provided for by Mr. Boone. The question was had Mr. S. been provided for then or been promised by Mr. Boone not that a promise was enough to warrant withdrawal. JT thought this conduct very improper. He had not thought the Dissolution imminent as it turned out to be with their candidate probably having accepted their offer on his way to be received at Mr. S's house The World would think that Mr. S. had been bought off by the Orford Party. If discovered neither the Orford or the Palls party would feel obliged by this. In future JT would not feel safe to accept Mr.S. into their party. As a friend JT urged Mr.S. to think again. He offered his servants to help Mr.S. who had dismissed his own servants.

Mr.S. introduced Mr. Brooke to JT declaring himself bound to the offer of his vote, interest, house etc. on one condition that he was not provided for by Mr. Brooke. Mr. S. exibited Mr. Boone's promises to Ld. North's friend to enhance his claims on him and the opposition against Ld. Orford in order to get provision for himself from Mr. Boone. Mr.S. anxious to perfect his bargain with Mr. Boone, fearing discovery, saying to JT he would defer acting till he saw what could be done with Mr.Boone. JT said No, it would be improper. Mr.S. said he would desert JT, who said he would expose Mr.S. JT would advise the the candidate to decline the affair.
