Seale 1169 J. Opie to J. Seale 22 Dec. 1789 Crucifixion picture.   Seale Family Papers      1788-1790 18thC
DHRG No. 101332
Crucifixion picture. Nothing done to picture since J.S. was in Town. Thought J.S. did not like it. Scenery could be brightened. J.O's friends appreciated it. J.S.'s critical friends. Serpent not seen in any good picture (of the Crucifixion) by old masters worth up to 3 or 4 thousand pounds or more. Ground level not shown in the picture, no place for a serpent unless flying in the air. Surprise at being recommended to a 2 pence print. He had intended finishing the picture by summer. Now very busy on Boydell's picture and other things. He should finish the Crucifixion picture in 6 weeks or 2 months.

DHRG No. 101333
Picture wanted to fill space in church (Cornworthy)_. Twopenny print might be taken from a good picture. Good effect with the serpent. Satisfield if J.O. had just said there was no room. Letter from paper enclosed, possibly useful. Picture to be sent by Coaster from Gray's Warf. Important to keep it dry.
