JS's letter gave more hope that the Commissioners of Excise might, with the affidavit, relieve JS from the Duty concerning the Auction Case. FFL had no scruple in complying with JS's request.

JN had given JW's report & JS's letter to the Hon.Commissioners of Excise but they had again demanded the duty on the Purchase of South Town immediately & if not JS would be put to Trouble.

JW again troubled by a letter from the Collector who he was to meet the next day at Modbury. What was he to say? If duty was not to be paid JW was to be indemnified. Mr. Fownes implied business was settled.

JS absent, some days from home. Surprise & hurt at JW's trouble. The property was bought 1 hour after the sale was over. No collusion or fraud. Mr. Luttrell was asked to lay the statement before the solicitor of Excise with affidavit if needed. Property bought in for the seller at 2250 as stated by Mr. Farwell when JW's office was closed.

JS had hoped there would be no further need to trouble JW. But the auctioneer was being pressed for the tax. The property was bought for 2250- by authority of the Trustees without collusion or intended fraud. JW was to tell this to the Solicitor or other person in charge with affidavit if needed.

Board of Excise evidently determined JS was liable to tax therefore a great impropriety for FFL to interfere. Mr. Mayow might be a help by stating the circumstances.

J.W. received copy of JS's statement to the Board of Excise. About 6 weeks since J.W. saw the Collector of Plymouth, when he made a complaint. Nothing more heard from them since then, so advised JS not to send the statement unless they did anything.

H.J. enclosed Report of East Indian Directors. Evidently the Nabub had paid nothing. Deputy Director, Sir Stephen Lushington sympathetic to Sir P.J. Lord Bayning gave hope of Lord Mornington's support. H.J. trying hard to get George J. a licence to depart for Madras. Capt. Cleland offered a passage on the Exeter, leaving too soon? ??? Miss Lyttons ill - Judged marriage to Mr. Bulmes. Paulina's shoulder better.

In Town for a fortnight before seeing Lord Hobart. Nothing new from him; Hobot unlikely to pay. Meeting with Bosanquit, the Director. Memorial pressed in the strongest terms. Sir Stephen Lushington too ill to be seen Bosanquit said it was impossible to put Bond on the consolidated fund. Lady J. & Paulina were about to leave for Close House. Lord Bayning strongly pressed Sir. PJ's case on Lord Mornington.

Journey to London Sunday Dinner with Grandmother at Exeter then London Inn, accompanied Capt. Berkley to Axminster. Slept there. Monday with JS in post chase to Ringwood, much rain. JS's fear of Ague so ordered pipes Z tobacco for 2. Tuesday to Southampton, dined with Mr. Bentley met Mrs. Batesworth called on Mrs. Dumcresq & Dr. Hackett. No time to see Miss Bayard or Johnson. Mail Coach to London in the evening. Far enough for JS. JHS going on to Edinburgh in 2 or 3 days. Called on Mr. Bruce.

Father left in Town, JHS 2 days & 3 nights on the mail coach to Edinburgh, arriving morning of 13 Nov. 10-11am, the French master came; 11-12noon Dr.Robinson on natural philosophy. 12-1pm Mr. Playfair on mathematics; 2-3pm Mr. Tytler on history; 4pm dinner; after which the man with JHS explains things not understood; 8-9pm a private tutor on arithmetic etc.

JHS was with Mr. Manners Keeper of the Advocates Library Enlightened Scots very agreeable, the others extremely disagreeable, the students were blackguards. Dinner & evening parties, a very pleasant dinner at Baron Nort....'s? Miss Bruce very civil, affluent niece. Edinburgh romantic, Old Town dirty, New Town fine. Count d'Artois held his Court at Holyrood House.

JHS was with very hospitable people, but he did not intend staying more than 1 year. He intended to visit the Highlands, he hoped to see family & friends before this autumn. Astonished Dr. Birdwood etc. lived in Scotland instead of England, New Town in Edinburgh the finest in Gt. Britain. Card Assemblies had begun, no balls till the birthday: Ld.Ashburton in Edinburgh. Bluebeard proposed at the theatre - Mr. Dougan's marriage. JHS had honest older servant. Mrs Bruce very civil. Hope to meet Ld.Murray.

Scotch people took no notice of Christmas (also JHS's birthday) so JHS celebrated alone. Mr & Mrs Manners in great trouble on account of his brother. Letters from Mr. & Mrs Adams expected. Mr. A was to tell Jeff to look after the spaniels & pointers. Very sad about Will's death. Sorry if unable to see Lord Murray. Lord Ashburton said to be stupid. Scotch gentlemen ignore ladies at dinner etc.

Intention was to come home on Saturday then Monday- Lund's chaise but Grandmother wished to have the girls to stay with her. They said they had no clothes to wear so she had them washed. They could not leave without causing offence. The Fanshawes used to stay 3 weeks. Silver cup & ring sent to Adam. Not yet called on Mrs. Grainger.
