DHRG No. 101634
EMS had a very aggrevation to her distress, she paid the strictest attention to duty. The insinuations in the letter were unjust to G.Kekewich & herself. Common principles of justice might influence JS not to reproach GK so unjustly. EMS refused to communicate with GK without the consent of her friends. JHS had insinuated many unjust things. She had long given up happiness in this world etc. etc.

DHRG No. 101635
Maria's letter precise & affectionate with a little irritation. Her conduct very precipitate at the Assemby & altogether imprudent & against the consent of her friends. JHS had given her his most sincere impartial & disinterested sentiments. Mr. K. did not act that liberal part expected from a gentleman of honour, after JS had spoken to him in the most candid manner. Maria should give up a connection so inapplicable to her future welfare & happiness etc.

TL would do nothing without JS's consent. Expensive education. He had £2500. He entered the Militia & years before he could begin his legal profession. Lord Stafford could help. Lord Ribblesdale might get him into Parliament. His inheritance from his Grandfather & Mother could be £200-500 a year. Delicacy almost forbade him to hint at Ld. Ribblesdale.

No hint of Mr. Roope quitting C.Hayne's house in Dartmouth. S.S. & family preferred to go to Mt. Boone as it was, need to stop the rat's holes, whitewash & clean the paint. Intended alterations could be done any time, or go to Little Dartmouth. Maria promised to write a dutiful submissive letter to JS; very angry with SS for what she had told JS. She also blamed JHS. Thunderstruck by JS's letter. No partiality for Miss MB, her birth not so agreeable. Her uncle might marry, & hopes of inheritance. £1000 a year & Mt. Boone were no inducement to marry. She was extravagent, spoilt & a high spirit. Supper that evening with them. Had JS received Mr. Manner's bill. Care needed over T.Lister. Good letter to Ld. Rolle. Jeff old, not careful with the horses.

Message given to Mr. Grant, gone to Cornworthy to collect what he could. Maria very unhappy. JS indifferent to SS's happiness, not SS to JS's Lord Fortescue's letters handed to Mr. Somerville Fownes, not well, under Mr. Hunt's care. Leaving Kittery 18 April. Fanny accepted his offer at Aldrswell. SS dined at Kittery previous Saturday. Maria needed a prudent friend such as Mrs. Tollet, Mr. Lister was a sensible man. Hope he would satisfy JS.

A child would have understood JS's letter of 17 inst. If JS felt it would be good for the family JHS would pay himself out to the best advantage & marry (Margaret S). College rising before 1 May. If staying at Edinburgh after that Mr. Manners would expect more pay. Anxious to be present at meeting of JS & T.Lister. Sam Fownes to marry Fanny Ilbert. Servant needed for the Militia.

Mr. Lister's friends were trying to dissuade him from marrying Harriet. His regard was not to be doubted. His domineering mother & imbecile grandfather without her favour. TL just had his own fortune. He implied that his mother would relent. So Harriet had hope.
