J.S. came to Lyme by water on Tuesday (7 September) 2 honest men guard house in London: another burglary nearby by a butler & 2 or 3 others. Many people at Lyme. AMS & CF's son welcome to come. JS's son (JMS) enjoys swimming: His little horse arrived at Dartmouth, ordered to be led to Franklyn. JS hoped to be in Exeter the following week.

Religion time & reflection helpful after misfortunes his boy's loss of leg bars him from active career; his good & patient mother, Mrs. G.happy to see Mrs. S. after Christmas. Mr. G. unable to accept invitation. 7 pupils. His 1 month holiday to begin 18 December. Brother a poor correspondent, so no Dartmouth news except that. Mr.G.'s late curate had gone to N-land: pity for family: halter too good for him.

JS able to see GG in Town. Any possibility of seeing Mr. G. at Dartmouth, not a long flight in mail or balloon, offer of winter accommodation; Mr. G. able to please himself, no hunting shooting or sailing. Misfortune difficult to define. Mr. G. has philosophy, reason & religion to help him.

Mr. Harington told T.V. that on paying his subscription to the Society for promoting Christian Knowledge he heard 2 years were due. T.V. had a letter demanding his subscription to Midsummer 1783 so presumed J.S. had forgotton to pay the 2 guineas he had sent.

J.S. called at the SPCK office that Thursday & paid the £2 from Mr. V & Mr. Harrington to Midsummer & his own subscription. He was very sorry about the reminder. He had called at the office but it was shut, sometime previously and left London that Saturday. He was glad Mr. & Mrs. V.were well.

JS rescued from law suit. WD had settled the horse business with Mr. Fletcher's Atty. whose client would send mare to any farrier of JS's choice. If terms not accepted would go on in Action, unless paid 5 guineas & costs. W.D. strongly disagreed. W.D. paid 4 guineas plus the one already paid.
