Received bill for £100. Soon after Mr. Fanshawe & his boy returned from Coal House. He dined that day at Tray Hill with the Legs, so sent thanks for the bill. Pleased at purchase of Little Dartmouth. Glad all were well. Attending sister out in the carriage.

Samuel Bully said he was 17 years in J.S's service, married & kept a shop, but had to return to service. Request to know as soon as possible if he was sober, honest, cleanly, good tempered & a good servant. Orderly man required. S.B. brought a few lines from Mr. Fownes of Lincolns Inn, but he omitted sobriety.

Mr. Henry White had rented the Rope Walk for 3 years. J.S. knew him before this & had confidence in him; a good character. He had just formed a partnership with a man of great property. Good prospects. Much rain. The young travellers had reached Hitcham. A good account of them.

Thanks for £50 bill & woodcock. Sorry for the loss for the people of Dartmouth who lives lost. Dreadful storms; cold E. Wind. Parson Newcombe settled his daughter. AMS hoped that advancing more money than expected would not spoil the match. AMS glad that grandchildren were safely back at school - Mr. Fanshawe sent love.

A.H's opposition to JS & the sense of the Town had brought against him a strong party. He had lost the confidence of the people & had exhausted the public resources & exposed the weakness of his constitution etc. He should consider if divisions & animosities should rage to a more inveterate height than ever before. A new Election would show if his opposition to JS would continue. An answer expected.

Letter to JHS's mother received, but addressed to J.S. without date. Glad all were well at Hitcham. J.S. hoped to find JHS had followed the rules in the little book given him & that he had attended to lessons & manners. His mother had had a good account of his sisters in London.

JS's letter to Mr. Poterhols delivered by Williams to Exminster. Mr. Newcombe not seen concerning W's character, delighted about his daughter marrying Mr. White & Miss N - sat in AMS's seat in church & about town together. Hannaford's lying letter an imposition saying she wished to have 'her' ? income! whom AMS had supported for many years at great expense, given 8 guineas on her departure by AMS. Hannaford was paid 5 Guineas towards Sally Mead's burial & AMS also paid towards her tomb & inscription, all for their own good not Betty Pearce's. What they decided to do, no concern of AMS. Wet dirty weather. Overleaf JS has written Fanshawe returned. Children pretty well. D.Yand came up Tuesday.

JS's name picked for Sheriff for another year. Capt. JC applied to be Captain of the Troop. Premium not chief pursuit. His mother was long a tenant of JS in Ashburton. Capt. J.C. served the last 3 sheriffs:- M. Parks, P.Pering & W.Palk.

Copies of Dartmouth writs & returns of 26 Edw 1 & 19 Edw 1V. No writ for 14 Edw.111 found, but in the 'Clause Roll' 14 Edw 111 in Prynne's Parliamentary Writs. King's writs to the Mayors & Sheriffs of counties to pay expenses of those elected & sent to Parliament. William Bacon was elected etc. 14 Edw 111: no writ found.
