No letter for some time from J.S. A.M.S. collected John from school that morning; since his illness John had not been taken to school in the afternoon while J.S. way away. Horse dealer Burrows found one of the horses sold by J.S. to Sir W.Leman was not sound. J.S. urged not to go to law about it. Coachman knew beforehand it was unsound.

J.S. ashamed of not writing before. Agitation for a month about horses. Stephens not to blame. Sir W. Lemon intended to return horses as unsound. J.S. expected Sir W.L. to apply to him. Late coachman said that the horses were sound J.S. agreed with him, he did not believe Burrows' opinion. No need to fear a trial.

JS did not know the efficiency of Tar Water. Mr. Gretton concerned about young John Henry being moved, his inattention attributed to his age and the inflammation of his eyes, so JS decided he should stay. Unknown ship wrecked in Bigbury Bay no survivors. John Henry to have his friends with him on 27 December to celebrate his birthday.

C.F. felt better after a brisk ride, taking 3 ¼ hours from Mt. Boone to Ashburton. He hoped Mrs. Seale felt no more ill effects after sitting up so late previous night. CF called on Miss Kitty. Mr. Peter left estate to younger brother who farmed it, charged with annuity of £40 to brother at Topsham. Halshanger freed from incumbrancy. Whole debt soon discharged. Bad effects of JS's anxiety about Borough Politics. If Col. Hardy was to vacate Mr. B (astard?) would succeed him. CF requested complete disclosure, always ready to help.

Very thankful for C.F's letter. J.S. spoke to C.F's friend A on the subject. A was greatly indebted to C.F. He had nothing unpleasant to communicate. Unfriendly to load C.F. with his private concerns, satisfield with the propriety of C.F's reasons. A had then abandoned his intentions and burnt the letter. Suggestion alluded to was founded on false grounds. A's duty to check growth of a power inimicable to his House. Mr. Gretton and the governess accepted C.F's invitation and would call en route to Exeter.
